The 2027 conference theme, The Texas Two-Step: Partnering for Impact Through Industry and Community Connections in Environmental Engineering Research and Education, reflects the growing importance of collaboration in addressing complex environmental challenges. The conference will highlight successful partnerships among universities, industry leaders, communities, and public-sector organizations while exploring new opportunities to translate research into meaningful environmental impact.
Hosted by The University of Texas at Austin and co-hosted by environmental engineering and science programs from across Texas, AEESP 2027 will take place in a region uniquely positioned at the intersection of water, energy, climate, infrastructure, and environmental health. The AEESP Research and Education Conference is the premier gathering of environmental engineering and science researchers, educators, students, and practitioners dedicated to advancing environmental knowledge and developing solutions to the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. Why Texas? Why Now?
Texas hosts more than 400 data centers that consumed 25 billion gallons of cooling water in 2025, with power demand expected to reach 78,000 MW by 2030. Two utilities now operate the largest inland desalination plants in the world. Two more have built direct potable reuse facilities. The Round Top mine in Sierra Blanca is shaping up as the country’s leading rare-earth project. Additionally, in the Houston, Galveston, and Beaumont corridor, communities are working alongside academics and industry on cumulative-impact air monitoring and resource recovery. There is no better place, and no better moment, to convene the people whose work will shape how the country answers the next decade of water, energy, and infrastructure questions.
